Beauty Picks for Fall 2014

ebblog fall 2014 picks

The fall is one of my favorite seasons. Yeah, towards the end when everything is dead it can be depressing but the transition of colors, fall flowers, the scents, flavors, the weather… I just LOVE Fall. Unlike the other three beauty seasons, fall tends to get the least amount of love because the Holiday collections usually launch within a month of fall actually settling in and the shift focuses to the Holiday deals and steals. Before the holidays take over our lives pick up some of my Fall 2014 Beauty Picks and enjoy everything that the fall has to offer. ebblo fall 2014 picks 1.) LORAC Pro 2 Palette $42.00 – I have already raved about this and the Pro 2 is the perfect collection of neutrals and jewel tones for Fall 2014 with the added extra bonus of a mini eye shadow primer as well. A budget friendly alternative would be the Wet n Wild Limited Edition Fall 2014 Melrose palettes. 2.) Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick $44.oo – I rave about this every month and the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick is the BUSINESS. I can fake trained estheticians when wearing this foundation that is how much it mimics actual skin. It is long wearing but emollient enough to not dry your skin out as the air gets drier. This foundation stick wears/covers well on its own, is easy to apply and has INSANE lasting power when paired with a primer/setting spray. 3.) Make Up Forever Mist & Fix $12.00-$29.00- This is a recent discovery of mine and I have been reaching for it more than my trusted MAC Fix+. The fall is a transitional season so depending on where you live experiencing summer like weather into November can be expected. Make Up Forever Mist& Fix will set your makeup for the humid days and it will also add some moisture to your skin on drier days. You can get a travel sized bottle for $12! 4.) Serenity + Scott Powder Foundation $26.00 – If you prefer a powder foundation this is going to be your holy grail. The Serenity + Scott Powder Foundation applies beautifully, looks like skin, doesn’t cling to dry skin and it is available in a variety of shades. This is hands down my favorite powder foundation and I typically don’t like them. 5.) Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Berry $21.00 – Berry and red shades are hot for Fall 2014. Melted Berry is hands down my favorite dark lippie of the moment. It is long wearing, doesn’t bleed, glossy, not drying on my lips and leaves a very pretty stain behind. Pro Tip for wearing a dramatic lip: If you have drier lips, exfoliate your lips first and then follow with a light layer of lip balm before you apply your makeup. By the time you’re ready to do your lips they will be hydrated and ready for color. Also, darker colors should also be applied with a lip brush. 6.) Rimmel London Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliners $3.99 – Waterproof, available in a staggering amount of colors, easy to apply, easy to find and affordable. What’s not to love about the Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal Eyeliners. Optimal colors for fall: Black, Brown, Purple, Taupe, Nude and Deep Blue. 7.) Milani Eye Primer $5.99 – This is the best eyeshadow primer on the market right now if you ask me. If you’re going to be rocking some funky Halloween makeup, on trend smoky eyes, graphic liner, etc Milani’s Eyeshadow Primer is going to be your new best friend. Pro Tip: If your foundation/concealer is creasing no matter what you do, try a little bit of eyeshadow primer underneath your foundation/concealer. What are your go to beauty products for the fall? Is there any Fall 2014 beauty trend you are just dying to try? Ashley

Wet N Wild Fall 2014 Melrose 5 Pan Palettes

ebblog wnw melrose main

Wet N Wild Fall 2014 Collection should be in your local drugstores/KMart by now. There are two separate displays: nail/lipsticks (six matte nail polishes and four Megalast Matte Lipsticks) and eyeshadow/mascaras (four new five pan Color Icon shadow palettes and Mega Impact Extreme Black Mascara).  For this purpose of this review I am going to be focusing on two of the four limited edition five pan Color Icon palettes: Smoke and Melrose and Melrose at Night. Each palette contains .21 0z of product and they retail for $3.99 each.

Smoke and Melrose

I think it’s safe to say that if it’s neutral eyeshadows in palette form I will more than likely buy it, especially when they are below $5.00. I’ll be honest, I’ve read some not so stellar reviews about the Color Icon five pan palettes, so I really have avoided them. These two however were so beyond hard to avoid. Smoke and Melrose is the warmer toned bronzy neutral palette,  while Melrose at Night leans slightly cooler and definitely in the brown/taupe family. Both palettes contain a mix of satin and shimmer finish shadows and no true matte shades. >sniffle<

Smoke and Melrose L to R: Browbone, Base, Definer, Eyelid and Crease

Between Smoke and Melrose and Melrose at Night, Smoke and Melrose is the clear winner. All of the shadows included in Smoke and Melrose are soft, easy to blend, very pigmented and wore for eight hours plus over primer. Four of the shadows included in the Melrose at Night palette proved to be in the same category as the shadows in Smoke and Melrose. The dud in Melrose at Night is the crease shade. It’s truly awful but over a primer it’s really not bad. That being said if I had to suggest one of the two I would pick Melrose at Night and I’ll tell you why: the brow bone shade is the prettiest shadow ever! This Taupey purple is the best shade between the two palettes. It applies beautifully and it is a pretty unique shade as it is a taupe but it comes off almost light purple. Loving the brow bone shade in the Melrose at Nigh palette. If purples are NOT your thing than Smoke and Melrose is your best bet.

I also want to take this time to get on my makeup soapbox! Dear Wet n Wild can you PLEASE label your shadows correctly! I feel like in both palettes the Browbone and Base shades should be swapped out. Both brow bone shades are way to dark to highlight. I can see maybe using the brow bone shade in Melrose at Night on a darker skin tone but that is pushing it.

At $3.99 a piece these are an absolute drugstore STEAL! I say SKIP the Maybelline Nude Palette and hunt these limited edition treats from Wet n Wild down before they are gone! The two of them are roughly $2 cheaper and perform better than any shade in the Maybelline Nude palette. And you might be able to grab these on BOGO!

Influencster Viva Vox Box

I was beyond excited when I learned I was selected for Influenster’s Viva Vox Box! I purposefully do not except much in terms of “freebies” but I L-O-V-E to receive random surprise boxes like this one. It’s like Christmas/my birthday when ever I get a surprise box. The Viva Vox Box was loaded with some great goodies and there was really only one product I wouldn’t use.

Right off the bat I was I was most excited about the Vaseline Spray&Go Moisturizer in Cocoa Radiant. This is my favorite formula in the Spray&Go line. If you’re a lazy lotion person like I am, then this is THE product for you. Those of you who have followed me for a while know that I have raved about this product before. Cocoa Radiant is time efficient and it works even on my dragon scale legs.

I also received a few color cosmetic items. I got two Pure Ice Nail Polishes in It’s Complicated and After Hours. It’s Complicated is a clear base loaded with multicolored glitter in what looks like three different sizes. I was able to get pretty good glitter payoff with some patience and two coats. It dried super fast which I love. After Hours is a stunning corally red pink cream nail polish. It went opaque in just two coats and dried really fast. I was able to dig around in my garden and do household chores with no chipping. I was chip free until day 3. Those results are without a top coat/base coat. Both polishes were extremely easy to remove. I’m not much of a nail polish girl BUT I do always wear polish on my toes and these two will make wonderful additions to my collection.

The other cosmetic item I received is from NYC. It’s their City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color in South Ferry Berry. This lippie is an intensely pigmented dark berry red that almost leans a little orange on my skin. It has a very intense Cherry Chapstick scent. It is a waxier, chubby lip pencil that will wear for up to 4 hours on me depending on what I’m doing. This shade will leave behind a slight stain that fades around the 6th hour.  South Ferry Berry has an almost glossy/satin finish. It is very moisturizing on my lips and due to the waxiness it does not bleed or move around.  I like that South Ferry Berry imparted a wearable lip color that was incredibly comfortable to wear and took me OUT of my comfort zone.

There are two products I haven’t tried yet: Cetaphil Cleansing Cloths and Montagne Jennesse Creamy Coconut Mask. I have a huge pack of MAC makeup Remover Wipes to get through an I am also testing out the Glam Glow mask so I haven’t had a chance to break out these goodies yet. I’ll post separate reviews when I finally do get to these items.

Finally included in our Influenster Viva Vox Box was Shell Fuel Rewards Card. This is the item I honestly won’t ever use. Our car and gas is fully paid for by my boyfriend’s company and we already have a preferred gas provider. I don’t dry so we are a one car household. Add in the fact that I can’t remember the last time I saw a Shell Station and this item will more than likely be gifted to family or a friend.

The Influenster Vox Box program is fun and free to join. Being extremely active on the Influenster site and participating in their initiatives can help bump you up in their Vox Box standings but in my experience it does seem completely based on random facctors that remain a mystery to me. Overall I enjoyed the Viva Vox Box. Did you receive one? Was your box similar to mine?

L’Oreal Miss Manga Mascara Black 373

miss manga package ebblog

L’Oreal Miss Manga Mascara is one of their newest mascara offerings here in the United States. It contains .27 Fl Oz of product and it retails for around $7.00.  Originally available elsewhere in three shades: Black, Violet and Turquoise, I was only able to find Black. Miss Manga is seeing a limited release run right now (it is not even on the L’Oreal USA website) but it should be widely available by Summer 2014. I am not sure if we will be seeing the Violet or Turquoise shades.

I found Miss Manga at my local Bed. Bath and Beyond. Did you know that some of them sell makeup? Odd, but whatevs! She was chilling like a villain, dangling in front of the L’Oreal shelves. They did not have an official display for the line which is why I cannot confirm if the other two shades are coming, all they had was Black. The packaging claims:

  1. 15X lash volume in a flash!
  2. Clump free, flake free and smudge free.

Manga pandas faces!

Can we talk about the packaging for a minute? How adorable is the little manga panda character? That is what initially drew me in. I’m a sucker for cutesy packaging. The tube itself is very sleek and pretty. I adore the hot metallic pink cap, it makes this mascara easy for em to find in my makeup bag. I also like the script style of “Miss Manga”. I’m weird, I know.

Ok, so on to the ACTUAL product. I will admit I did not pay attention to much of the packaging claim because I was so distracted by the little manga panda and I am glad I didn’t because I might not have bought it. Miss Manga has a similar wand to the Maybelline’s Volum Express Mega Plush, it is hinged at one point. That was an immediate turn off for me. I did not care for the feature on the Maybellina mascara so I was SURE I was going to hate Miss Manga. Thankfully, I was wrong.  Miss Manga has it going on in two places: the brush and the formula. The brush itself is composed of fiber bristles in a conical shape. The brush makes it beyond easy to get into every crevice around your eye for even application.

miss manga review ebblog

Miss Manga’s formula is FANTASTIC. It reminds me very much of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, just with a better brush. It is on the drier side, which makes it great for ladies with sparse and/or thinner lashes (like me!) but it delivers on all of the promises. Upon initial application you might notice some very slight clumping but just work the brush through your lashes and you’ll be amazed how quickly your lashes separate and gain volume. Surprisingly I also got some length out of this mascara as well. My lashes have a natural curve, so I cannot attest to how well Miss Manga will hold your curl if you have stick straight lashes. They are also uneven: my left lashes are sparser than my right lashes. Miss Manga wore like a champ for well over 8 hours with no smudging or flaking and was very easy to remove.

ashley pena miss manga ebblog

Miss Manga applied to the left eye. No mascara on the right. I am wearing my typical daily eye makeup. My lashes on my right eye are about double the thickness of the lashes on my left naturally.  Miss Manga evened them out nicely!

As I mentioned this previously, Miss Manga’s formula is on the drier, thick side so it probably will not work for those of you with fuller lashes, although I noticed no change on my right lashes. I suggest storing Miss Manga upright (the wand pointing down) so it won’t dry out as fast as a wetter mascara will. As of right now, this is my go to mascara for thick, dramatic lashes. Miss Manga is NOT a replacement for false lashes, but it will give you a nice, smokey, full lash. I really wish the photo did it more justice. For under $8 Miss Manga is a steal.
