My Favorite Urban Decay Products

ebblog faves urban decay

Urban Decay has come a looooong way since it’s initial offering of nail polish on the shelves of Hot Topic. Today the brand sports a wide variety of products that can make any beauty novice’s head spin. Like every beauty brand out there, the line sports some big hits and massive duds. I want to help you avoid the Urban Decay duds and give you what I feel are the standouts in the Urban Decay Line.

24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil – There are some products that just don’t live up to their cult status and hype. The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils deserve all the kudos they receive. These creamy, long wearing eye pencils definitely deserve all the praise they receive. Available in a stunning array of colors, there really is something for everyone in the 24/7 Glide-On Pencil line. While you might want to reach for trusty standby shades of brown or black, I suggest trying purples and greasy too as an alternative to “safe” colors. My picks are Smoke, Mushroom, Invasion, Vice and Empire.

urban decay optical blurring brush top urban deca picks

Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush – This face brush is hands down my favorite brush ever! It works with cream and liquids to give a perfect finish that you just have to see to believe. The Optical Blurring Brush handles well, has the perfect weight to it and also works to blend blush/bronzer/highlight. As a makeup artist it’s rare for me to be like, “OMG you must has dis brush??!”. The Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush is a definite must have.

L to R: Cannonball, Perversion and SuerCurl

Mascaras – Urban Decay does mascaras very, VERY well. With one exception (the new Fatty is HORRID!) you can’t really go wrong with Cannonball (Waterproof), Supercurl or Perversion. I love all three and use them each for different purposes. Cannonball when I need a waterproof option. Perversion when I want dark, glossy, intense lashes. Supercurl when I am looking for a denser, thicker lash or to hold a curl. I own all three and reach for them all equally but if I had to choose just ONE: Perversion ALL the way!

naked basics top urban decay

Naked Basics – If you own one Urban Decay palette than the original Naked Basics is the one you SHOULD own. You can go from light wear, to work wear and then kick up for a smokey, night time look. All five shades in this palette are stunning, easy to work with and long wearing. Good mattes are hard to find and a predominantly matte palette that is not a chalk fest is even harder to find. Naked Basics is under $30 which also makes it a great palette at an awesome price.

all nighted urban decay top products

All Nighter Setting Spray – I find that not everyone needs to “set” there makeup with a powder. I only really recommend a powder to set if your really oily OR wearing a tinted moisturizer/BB/CC/DD/FF/AA cream and you’re looking to pump up the overage. Setting powders can be really hard to work with and they can take your perfect look to cake town if you’re not careful. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is the perfect way to “set” your makeup without cake face OR correct cake face. Yes, you can fix over powdering with All Nighter (or any facial spray). Just spritz some All Nighter on a fluffy brush and gently buff away the excess powder on your face. You can also buy All Nighter in smaller purse sized travel packaging making touch ups easy!

24/7 glide-on lip pencils top urban decay

24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils – The cousin of their ultra famous 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils, their lip pencil options are JUST as fabulous! The 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils are long wearing, they stay in place and they will keep your lip color locked in place for hours. What you don’t hear about these lip pencils is how creamy and pigmented the 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencils are. You can actually wear these all over lips (over a great balm if you suffer form dry chapped lips) without the tugging you normally get with most pencils. In the 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil have a liner and long wearing lip color in one. Not looking for any color, try Ozone for a clear liner that keeps your lippies in place and adds subtle definition to your lips.

Honorable Mention goes to Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Foundation. It wears for hours, looks like skin, provides great coverage and photographs well. It can be a little drying so if you have drier, flakey skin this is not a foundation for you.

Beauty Picks for Fall 2014

ebblog fall 2014 picks

The fall is one of my favorite seasons. Yeah, towards the end when everything is dead it can be depressing but the transition of colors, fall flowers, the scents, flavors, the weather… I just LOVE Fall. Unlike the other three beauty seasons, fall tends to get the least amount of love because the Holiday collections usually launch within a month of fall actually settling in and the shift focuses to the Holiday deals and steals. Before the holidays take over our lives pick up some of my Fall 2014 Beauty Picks and enjoy everything that the fall has to offer. ebblo fall 2014 picks 1.) LORAC Pro 2 Palette $42.00 – I have already raved about this and the Pro 2 is the perfect collection of neutrals and jewel tones for Fall 2014 with the added extra bonus of a mini eye shadow primer as well. A budget friendly alternative would be the Wet n Wild Limited Edition Fall 2014 Melrose palettes. 2.) Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick $44.oo – I rave about this every month and the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick is the BUSINESS. I can fake trained estheticians when wearing this foundation that is how much it mimics actual skin. It is long wearing but emollient enough to not dry your skin out as the air gets drier. This foundation stick wears/covers well on its own, is easy to apply and has INSANE lasting power when paired with a primer/setting spray. 3.) Make Up Forever Mist & Fix $12.00-$29.00- This is a recent discovery of mine and I have been reaching for it more than my trusted MAC Fix+. The fall is a transitional season so depending on where you live experiencing summer like weather into November can be expected. Make Up Forever Mist& Fix will set your makeup for the humid days and it will also add some moisture to your skin on drier days. You can get a travel sized bottle for $12! 4.) Serenity + Scott Powder Foundation $26.00 – If you prefer a powder foundation this is going to be your holy grail. The Serenity + Scott Powder Foundation applies beautifully, looks like skin, doesn’t cling to dry skin and it is available in a variety of shades. This is hands down my favorite powder foundation and I typically don’t like them. 5.) Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Berry $21.00 – Berry and red shades are hot for Fall 2014. Melted Berry is hands down my favorite dark lippie of the moment. It is long wearing, doesn’t bleed, glossy, not drying on my lips and leaves a very pretty stain behind. Pro Tip for wearing a dramatic lip: If you have drier lips, exfoliate your lips first and then follow with a light layer of lip balm before you apply your makeup. By the time you’re ready to do your lips they will be hydrated and ready for color. Also, darker colors should also be applied with a lip brush. 6.) Rimmel London Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliners $3.99 – Waterproof, available in a staggering amount of colors, easy to apply, easy to find and affordable. What’s not to love about the Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal Eyeliners. Optimal colors for fall: Black, Brown, Purple, Taupe, Nude and Deep Blue. 7.) Milani Eye Primer $5.99 – This is the best eyeshadow primer on the market right now if you ask me. If you’re going to be rocking some funky Halloween makeup, on trend smoky eyes, graphic liner, etc Milani’s Eyeshadow Primer is going to be your new best friend. Pro Tip: If your foundation/concealer is creasing no matter what you do, try a little bit of eyeshadow primer underneath your foundation/concealer. What are your go to beauty products for the fall? Is there any Fall 2014 beauty trend you are just dying to try? Ashley

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner

ebblog benefit they're real push-up Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner is their latest edition to the “They’re Real” line. It contains .04 oz of product and it retails for $24.00. The Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner has not yet been released. It is expected to hit Benefit’s site on June 27th, 2014 and Benefit counters/retailers shortly after. I had completely sworn off Benefit Cosmetics new “gimmicky” releases. I’m not going to lie, the marketing behind Benefit’s latest release totally sold me on buying the They’re Real Push-Up Liner. I’ve seen it in a few YouTube videos, I saw Benefit’s “police” themed ads for it, I TOTALLY succumbed to the “hype” surrounding They’re Real Push-Up Liner. What can I say? I am human. Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner is a rather interesting liner. This is NOT your typical liner pen. It is pen shaped with a rubber “AccuFlex” tip that is designed to “hug the lash line” and deposit just the right amount of black eyeliner. The actual eyeliner housed inside the pen is a gel liner (and not liquid!). To dispense the product there is a twist dispenser located at the bottom of They’re Real Push-Up Liner. To use it you only need to twist it “once” and then rest the AccuFlex tip on the base of your lashes and slowly guide along your lashline. You can start from your inner or outer corner.

The AccuFlex Tip from Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner

While applying Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner sounds simple enough, there is a bit of a learning curve. Finding the right way to apply this liner will vary by person. The AccuFlex tip is comfortable and it doesn’t drag across my lids. The gel liner is VERY dry, when applying this across my lashline I did have to touch up the spots where I had some gaps in the liner when wearing the They’re Real alone. When wore over a powder/cream shadow it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to apply, the gel liner is so dry it would not apply at all on top of any shadow product. It became a dry, chunky mess. Once set on my bare eye, I found the liner to be budge proof and on my eyes water proof. It wore for a good 8 hours without any noticeable fading on my oily eyelids and then started to fade around hour 9 or so. They’re Real Push-Up Liner was easy to remove and it did not stain the skin. While it excels at making a nice thick line and winger liner on bare skin it is almost impossible to create a thinner, more natural looking line along the lashline.

In this swatch you can see how dry the liner is. This is swatched on bare skin.

Benefit’s latest gimmick is a beauty flop. There are much creamier, easier to apply gel liners out there. My pick would be Essence Gel Eyeliners which are available at a a fraction of the cost ($3.99). Will you be trying Benefit’s They’re Real Push Up Liner? What type of eyeliner do you like?
