August 2014 Faves

ebblog august 2014 faves

I cannot believe it’s September already? Where has this year gone? August was a weird month for us here in the Chi. It was downright cool at some points but Summer came roaring back the last few weeks of August and it has been pretty humid and hot, yuck! I had a few favorites for the month of August, some of them are predictable (obviously!) and some of them are brand new. But because of the heat I can honesty say that I wore very minimal makeup for more than half of the month.

ebblog august 2014 faves

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick – Honestly, if you haven’t tried this you are missing out! I’m fairly consistent when it comes to favorite products and this foundation has been my go to since I bought it waaaaaay back when it first launched. My official review is here.

batiste dry shampoo august 2104

Forgot to include this in my group shot!

Batiste Dry Shampoo Fruity & Cheeky Cherry – A recent discovery for me. I grabbed a can of this prior to leaving for Mexico in July and I fell in love with it. I just bought another can of the Fruity & Cheeky Cherry scent and I got one for brunettes. Batiste is an affordable dry shampoo option at 7.99 and it works better then most high end dry shampoos I have tried. The scent is more fruity than cherry but it smells really, really good.  This particular scent absorbs oil and freshens my hair very well. It also adds a nice, long lasting volume. You can find Batiste Dry Shampoos in a variety of scents at various stores. I buy mine at Ulta and Walgreens.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara – Ok, so I like this better than my previous fave L’Oreal Miss Manga. Perversion is ultra black, ultra shiny goodness folks! I know, I know I kind of dogged on the mascara in my August 2014 Ipsy Bag review BUT I am a woman and therefore allowed to change my mind. I really, really LOVE this mascara. Against my fair skin it just makes my lashes “POP”. Perversion doesn’t clump my lashes, it’s extremely easy to build up and the brush/wand is the bomb. This mascara gives me just the right amount of oomph for any occasion.  I just bought a full size yesterday. =)

Serenity + Scott Powder Foundation – I discovered this brand at TMS Chicago this year. Their Powder Foundation is the bee’s knees. And when combined with my Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick I get perfect, natural looking skin. I’ve never used a powder foundation that mimics natural skin like this one. It is fabulous: wears softly on the skin, doesn’t stick to drier patches on the skin, or “sit” on top of the skin. I finally found a powder foundation that I like.

Urban Decay Naked Lipgloss in Naked – This was the ONLY product I have used on my lips for the past month (until my Berry obsession which happened at the tail end of August). Naked is the perfect shade of sheer peachy pink for me. It’s just gorgeous with an added bonus of not drying my lips out as it has some née moisturizing properties packed in it.. I also adore the packaging, it’s very luxe and a definite conversation starter.

Anastasia Brow Wiz – Try as I may I cannot find anything that replaces my beloved Anastasia Brow Wiz. I love a natural brow that has some skin peaking through. And I can get this effect with my beloved Brow Wiz. The skinny tip is perfect for creating a natural brow and I like the spoolie on the end. This is an all in one product for me but if it’s insanely muggy out I do need to set it with a powder.

As you can tell by now I went ultra natural for August 2104. Was it hot and muggy in your neck of the woods like it was here? What were your faves for the month of August 2014?

Too Faced Melteds Fall 2014

ebblog too faced fall 2014

I have RAVED previously about the Too Faced Melted line which launched with their Summer 2014 collection. If you have not tried these yet they are seriously the bee’s knees! Too Faced is continuing their love affair with the Melted line with four new permanent shades in their Fall 2014 Collection: Melted Fig, Melted Berry, Melted Candy and Melted Marshmallow. As an FYI Melted Candy was available to Sephora VIB Rouge members for a limited time with the initial launch of the Melted Line. Let’s break the new Melteds down!

Melted Fig – Rosy orchid almost mauve.

Melted Berry – Berry red with an emphasis on the berry side.

Melted Candy – Bright fuchsia pink it almost leans red on me.

Melted Marshmallow – Described as candy pink but to me it’s a nude pink and not exactly what I think of when I hear “candy pink”

Out of the four new shades, initially I knew I wanted Melted Fig and Melted Marshmallow. I found these in Ulta the day before we left for Mexico. I swatched Melted Fig and Melted Marshmallow on my hand while my hair was processing. (BTW I got odd looks but wharves!) Melted Marshmallow was way too similar to Melted Nude and Melted Peony which I already own. So, I grabbed Melted Fig and on a whim I swatched Melted Berry. I knew I would love Melted Fig what I was NOT planning on was falling in LOVE with Melted Berry. I am not drawn to darker lip colors ever but Melted Berry was just calling to me. I had to grab it as well.

Melted Fig is not as dark and scary in person as it appears online and it definitely leans on the purple side. It’s a great alternative to a nude pink for an everyday look for someone with my skin tone and pigment in my lips. Melted Berry is quickly becoming my favorite shade of bold, statement lipstick. It’s the perfect marriage of red meets berry and even though it is dark it doesn’t look odd on my fair skin.

L to R: Melted Berry and Melted Fig

Formula wise these are the same as the previous two I reviewed: long wearing, comfortable and not overly drying. Melted Berry also leaves a beautiful stain behind. I did notice one minor difference between the initial six and these two newest shades! Melted Berry and Melted Fig have a very strong fruit candy scent. almost reminds me of Victoria Secret Love Spell. I almost wish they tasted like fruit too, but they do not.

My pick out of the new bunch of Melteds is Melted Berry! It’s the perfect shade to take from fall through the holidays. Each of the Too Faced Melteds contain .40 fl. oz and retail for $21.00. The four newest shades should be available at Too Faced counters that have completed their Fall 2014 reset and they are available online of course! Will you be grabbing any of these new shades?

bare Minerals Destination Glow

bare Minerals Destination Glow ebblog

bare Minerals Destination Glow is a six piece (including the totally adorable mini tote) limited edition set for the Summer 2014 from bare Minerals. This set includes five full sized items and retails for $39.oo. The retail value of the bare Minerals Destination Glow set if purchased separately is $87. I want to say this is an Ulta exclusive as I have not seen it anywhere else. It is still available on the Ulta site and in stores.

bare Minerals Destination Glow contents ebblog

The beyond adorable bare Minerals Destination Glow summer set is definitely beach themed. All of the products included in the Destination Glow set are designed to be either long wearing, waterproof or hydrating all optimal for outdoor summer wear. Not that I normally wear makeup to the beach but I would wear the items in Destination Glow to an amusement park, a BBQ or some other summer destination. The set breaks down like this:

bare Minerals Destination Glow BB Eye Cream

5-In-1 Advanced BB Perfomance Cream Eye Shadow Broad Spectrum 15 in Soft Linen (0.10 oz.) – I bought this set just for this product because at the time these were only available exclusively in sets. You can now purchase the 5-In-1 BB Performance Cream Eye Shadow on the bare Minerals site and I believe these officially launch in store soon. 5-In-1 Advanced BB Perfomance Cream Eye Shadow are touted to wear for 12 hours and unfortunately Soft Linen did not stand up to the heat and humidity of Chicago’s summer. I wore Soft Linen on a hot, humid day without primer and it creased within an hour. When used with a primer or as a primer I had no issues with lasting power or fading. The formula itself is very soft, creamy, easy to apply, blends well and sets to a powder-like consistency. The “bb” aspects of it are really just fluff with one exception, Soft Linen did brighten up my tired eyes. The product itself is housed in a frosted glass tube and it is applied with a doe foot applicator, much like the classic Urban Decay Primer Potion. I like this product but I am iffy about buying any other shades as I feel Soft Linen is the best shade for me and the other shades in the line appear to be more on the lines of neutral skin tones as opposed to straight on color.

bare Minerals Destination Glow ebblog eyeshadow

Riviera Eye Color in Sunbaked Bronze (0.02 oz.) – The perfect shade of shimmery bronze for the summer. I thoroughly enjoyed this shade as it can be applied lightly or a sheer wash or layered for an intense, almost smoky finish. Sunbaked Bronze was the first time I had ever used a loose bare Minerals eyeshadow and I had no fall out issues applying it from the jar to my face. Sunbaked Bronze wore for hours upon hours over primer without primer I got a good hour crease free. I would like to state that I have oily, hooded lids so very few product

bmdestglow ebblog 8

Full Size Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara in Black (0.33 fl. oz.) – I was not exactly wowed by this mascara. While long wearing and waterproof, it is very difficult to remove and I don’t really feel it does much for me in terms of volume and length. It does deliver in the definition promise but Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara will clump while attempting to layer it. The formula reminds me of an expensive version of Covergirl’s Clump Crusher Mascara without the ability to keep adding layers without clumping. The brush is a very full and made of synthetic hair like bristles. Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara will work for me on the days when I need a waterproof mascara and those are few and far between: beach/water park days.

bare Minerals Destination Glow review

Faux Tan Matte All Over Face Color (0.05 oz.) – I have to admit I didn’t like this when I swatched it. Faux Tan Matte looked almost orange and I didn’t think it would work for me. Surprisingly, Faux Tan Matte works very well to add a sun kissed glow to my skin. I don’t think I could use this to contour with as it would probably look a little muddy but just a touch of this on the high points of my face gives me just the right amount of bronzy, summer glow. On it’s own the wear time will vary depending on your skin type. I had no issues with it on my cheeks, forhead and chin. It faded on the bridge of my nose in two hours when wore alone. Combined with a primer and foundation I had ZERO wear issues with bare Mineral Faux Tan Matte All Over Face Color.

bare Minerals Destination Glow review

Loud & Clear Lip Sheer in Magenta Vibe (0.07 oz.) – Hands down, my favorite item in this set. If you don’t know by now I am not a bright/loud/bold lip girl. The Loud & Clear Lip Sheer in Magenta Vibe is just perfect for me! It’s the perfect punch of color without being too much for me. Magenta Vibe is a tinted lip balm which is meant to be on the sheer side, imparting just enough color and moisture. It doesn’t bleed all over but it also not a very long wearing product either. Wear time aside it is a lip balm that is perfect to toss in your purse for those days when you need a hint of color and moisture. Magenta Vibe is exclusive to this set as far as I know.

full face bare Minerals Destination Glow review Ashley Pena

Ready for that summertime BBQ! Foundationless face, dark eyeliners are Urban Decay, brows by Anastasia and concealer is from The Balm, everything else is bare Minerals Destination Glow.

All in all, I really like bare Minerals Destination Glow. I was surpised that my favorite of the bunch is the Loud & Clear Lip Sheer in Magenta Vibe. I really want to try more from this line of bare Minerals products.  As I mentioned before this appears to be an Ulta exclusive which means that if you are signed up to receive their e-mails they occasionally offer discounts on their bare Minerals products and picking bare Minerals Destination Glow on a discount is a GREAT deal. Have you tried this set? Do you have any bare Mineral faves?

The Skinny on Fusion of Color Cosmetics

(All products in this post were provided by Fusion of Color Cosmetics for editorial consideration. All opinions expressed are my own and I received NO compensation to write this post. For more information please see my disclosure policy here.)

fusion of color logo ebblog

Fusion of Color Cosmetics is the first indie brand I have ever had the pleasure of trying. Every product on Fusion of Color’s website is custom made and NEVER repackaged. That is such a HUGE plus for me. I often times cannot tell what has been repackaged from a private label firm versus what is custom created. The owner of Fusion of Color, Kathy, is also such a huge sweetheart. We have never met officially but we follow each other on social media and are in some of the same social circles. She is passionate about the industry and supportive of other’s endeavors. Truly a class act which can be harder to find in a person these days. Plus Fusion of Color Cosmetics is locally based and I have yet to try anything made here in Chicago. I’m such a bad Chicagoan!

Enough about the company and onto the products! I was sent the following: 3 eyeshadows, 1 matte blush, 1 matte lipstick and a lipgloss. I’m not super experienced when it comes to loose cosmetics products because my personal preference is to use pressed products. I liked that all of the loose powders came sealed and with a sifter to allow for easy, mess free use. You can remove the sifters easily to allow for ease of application when using brushes with out an explosion of powder.

Before I get into the powder products though I just have to give a special mention to Sass Lipgloss ($8-$10 depending on the size) in Pretty in Pink, a beautiful semi opaque creamy pink. This is hands downs, the BEST lipgloss I have ever owned. Pretty in Pink It’s comfortable to wear, has enough slip but it doesn’t bleed, sheer enough to apply on the go but still leave a hint of color, doesn’t dry out lips, NOT sticky, awesome packaging and Pretty in Pink is just SO pretty! I cannot rave about this lipgloss enough. I wore it all weekend and got compliments. Anyone who knows me will attest to the fact that I am not a religious lippie gal. I usually toss on my EOS Lip Balm and run out the door, The Sass Lipgloss in Pretty in Pink however has changed my lip game. You have to own this universally flattering shade of pink! I want more of this line and the colors available look like they would be right up my alley. The wear time on this will vary depending on what you do. If I am not chatting, drinking or eating a lot then I can go a good 3-4 hours with it. I don’t mind having to reapply Pretty in Pink because with the applicator and the gloss, it’s like a treat for my lips. This is everything I wanted Urban Decay’s Naked line of glosses to be.

The look I created using my Fusion of Color Cosmetics goodies!

I tested three powder shadows ($4.85) from the line: Frosty Morning, Angel and Amethyst Shimmer. All three were intensely pigmented, true to the color in the pot, soft and blendable. Out of the three Frosty Morning is my fave only because I love neutrals! The other two shades of purple are soft and wearable. While they are shimmery and glittery in the pot they don’t translate as “disco ball” on the eye. They all wore really well over a primer. In the humid Chicago weather they went the distance for me (8+ hours) with little to no fading depending on where I applied them I’ll break them down below.

Frosty Morning – A warm toned slightly golden fleshy beige with some shimmer and microgliter. I like to wear this a sheer wash of color on my lids. Perfect for summer on your “no makeup” makeup days to perk up tired eyes.

Angel – A soft, light purple with microglitter. Unsure of wearing color? Angel is the perfect shade of purple to pop on the lids without feeling like a throwback to the 80’s. You can also smudge out eyeliner to add a subtle pop of color to a neutral look.

Amethyst Shimmer – A greyish purple with a pink microglitter. The base of this shade is not overly shimmery, making this a great crease, outer “V”, liner color. Quick Tip: Another way to punch up a neutral look is to place color in your outer V.

L to R: AmethystShimmer, Frosty Morning, Angel and Dilly

In addition to the gloss and the eyeshadows, Fusion of Color sent over a blush in the shade “Dilly” ($7.35) and in the Matte Lipstick (.07 oz $5.50) shade Nude. Dilly is a completely matte, light neutral peachy pink color. The formula is very soft, blendable and it is beyond pigmented. Dilly is a favorite of mine as well. It’s the PERFECT natural shade for my NC25 skin tone. I did not find Dilly overly warm or cool and it should work on light to medium skin tones. Dilly wore for about 7 hours on unprimed skin before I really saw any fading.

Finally, I was sent their in Nude. I enjoyed the formula. It didn’t settle in the fine lines in my lips or dry my lips out over time. Nude wore for 4 hours on it’s own through chatting and drinking.  What I didn’t like was the color on me. Nude was a more brown/orange then a nude for me (I am more rosey on my lips). I put this in my kit. I can definitely see this being gorgeous on someone with darker skin.

Top to Bottom: Sass Lipgloss in Pretty in Pink and Matte Lipstick in Nude.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Fusion of Color Cosmetics experience. I actually am wanting to try more and once I get through my “Beauty Review” drawer I probably will. I MIGHT cave and grab more Sass Lipgloss now! Pricewise and quality wise you really cannot beat Fusion of Colors Cosmetics.  If you have not tired their line yet, you need to. Especially if you’re a mineral cosmetics fan.

Ipsy May 2014 Bag

ipsy may 2014 ebblog

Hola! My Ipsy May 2014 Bag literally just got here and I ALREADY have an opinion on it. This month’s theme is Fresh Picks, I have heard some Internet rumbling about the contents of the bag so I was a little put off and worried about my bag. I don’t check my monthly Glam Room so my Ipsy Bag contents can be somewhat of a surprise. And yes, I do have an insane amount of self control!

The actual bag this month is really pretty. I am getting an ECO Tools vibe from it. Here is what came in my Ipsy May 2014 Bag:

ipsy may 2014 contents ebblog

Derma E Microdermabrasion Scrub – So NOT excited about this product. I mean I’ll use it but I JUST got a similar product last month. Hello Ipsy? Are you trying to tell me something? It has a very citrusy scent that like but I’m not too sure how my skin will react to this as I am quite sensitive to citrus essence and oils.

Hang Ten Classic Sport SPF 50 – Who doesn’t need sunscreen? Especially a one that is water resitant. It is a sealed sample and I don’t want to open it yet because I plan to take it with me to Mexico this summer. If I can’t use it I am sure someone in my family will. SPF 50 is a godsend for me and my super fair skin. I could have probably used 250 of this little tubes just for the summer… =)

eva-nyc Therapy Session Hair Mask – I really wanted to try this product out. It’s a a hair mask with Argan oil and Keravis protein. I used this last night and I L-O-V-E it! My hair is beyond soft and hydrated.I shower daily but I only wash my hair 2 maybe 3 times a week and I can definitely see using this when I wash my hair. Especially with all of the heat I use on my hair.  This size of the eva-nyc Therapy Session Hair Mask retails for $12.00. And it smells beyond good. This product made the bag for me.

Pacifica Mineral Shadows Duo #2 – Yes! I got the purple/white gold duo! I saw a friend who got this and I was beyond jealous. I was so happy to get the one I wanted. I have used Pacifica’s cosmetics line from Target before so I like the shadows. They perform as well as their other counterparts do. A great little duo for travel too.

swatch ipsy may 2014 ebblog

Olive Lips – A lip balm with formulated with olive oil and Rosemary. Who doesn’t love a lip balm? Another full size product in my bag. I read complaints about the scent but to me it really doesn’t have one. There is a faint herbal scent that I enjoy. I also have yet to try this product because I have about 50 EOS balms to get through. This little guy might also go in my travel bag for vacay this summer.

There you have it! I really, REALLY enjoyed my Ipsy May 2014  bag. I am OK with not receiving all color cosmetics all the time from Ipsy as long as it’s products that I have opted to receive on my Ipsy Match Quiz. I have said this before, Ipsy is like playing a monthly beauty poker. You gamble with $10 and sometimes you win, other times you lose, or just break even. This month I won. I got 5 useful items and found a conditioner I love. Thanks Ipsy! Do you get Ipsy? What was in your bag?
