minions movie night everyday beauty blog

It’s really easy this time of year to get wrapped up in stress and forget to take time for your family and yourself. A movie night is an excellent way to enjoy some of the fruits of your labor and spend time with family and friends. This summer’s fabulously funny family movie, Minions is sure to be a hit with the kids and Adults! Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. by Illumination Entertainment is sure to have your family rolling on the floor laughing. You can grab it now in stores or shop directly from the Minions movie website here. These little yellow guys are bound to bring laughter and joy to your family movie night this holiday season.

Make your Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. extra special by letting your family create their own completely homemade Frozen Banana Ice Cream Sandwiches!  My recipe is inspired by the minions and their LOVE for bananas. These yummy treats would surely entice your little and big minions into the kitchen to help you create these frozen desserts. Oh! Pssst! I have secret. Don’t let your little minions know but the actual ice cream part of this recipe is vegan AND healthy! Making homemade ice cream sandwiches is a great way to utilize any left over holiday cookies (in my case I had baked six dozen sugar cookies alone) you have sitting around, leaving you as much time as possible to enjoy Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. Chewy Sugar Cookies (Makes 36 cookies)

1 Cup (2 whole sticks) unsalted butter, softened.

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1 egg

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1/4 cup granulated sugar (for the yummy glittery effect)

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees. Line your baking trays with either parchment paper or a non stick baking mat.

Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl using a hand mixer. Creaming usually takes about 3 minutes. Once you get a light and fluffy mixture incorporate your egg.

Gently stir in flour, baking powder, salt and vanilla.

Using a tablespoon, scoop your cookie dough out and roll into a ball.

Add the remainder of your granulated sugar to a bowl for rolling prior to baking, Roll your cookie dough ball in the sugar and place on your baking sheet. Gently press your cookie dough ball flat. Repeat this process making sure to leave at least 1 1/2 inches of space between your cookie. Bake 8-10 minutes until slightly brown. Remember these are chewy cookies, if you prefer a harder cookie let them bake until browned.

Dairy Free Banana Ice Cream (For 12 Ice Cream Sandwiches)

6 very ripe bananas

A good food processor

Slice your bananas into rounds. The size doesn’t matter here as they are going into the food processor later.

Put your banana rounds into a freezer safe bag. Freeze for at least 2 hours but 24 hours is best.

You are going to need a really good food processor. Add your bananas in batches. For this recipe I did it in batches of 3 evenly divided banana rounds as I have a larger food processor

Start by pulsing your frozen rounds for 10-15 seconds until they break down into what I say looks like little chunks of what I would say looks like those little ice cream orbs usually found in amusement parks and such.

Using a rubber spatula scrape down the sides of the food processor. Continue this process until your banana rounds break down completely and form a creamy “ice cream”. Place in a freezer safe container to let it set. Eat at your leisure.

What your dairy free banana ice cream will look like after setting.

Yup! That’s it. Now I know what you’re thinking? “Is she for real?” Seriously, Dairy Free Banana Ice Cream is the easiest, one of the most delicious desserts I have ever had. It is relatively healthy for you (in moderation!) and a great substitute for regular ice cream. I’m sure that the minions from Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. would love this too!

Assembling the Ice Cream Sandwiches (As pictured makes 12)

Chocolate Sprinkles

24 Round Sugar Cookies

Dairy Free Banana Ice Cream

Rubber Spatula

minions movie night everyday beauty blog

Let your Dairy Free Banana Ice Cream sit at room temperature to slightly soften. Attempting to spread the ice cream while its hard will break the sugar cookies.

Flip your sugar cookies over and place them side by side. Add as much or as little of your softened ice cream to the cookies on the right. Place the cookie on the left on top creating your sandwich.

Pour some chocolate sprinkles on a plate. Roll the ice cream sandwiches in the chocolate sprinkles. Freeze to set.

You can really turn your Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. movie night into an extra special event by adding minions related plates, cups, decor, etc that is available at retailers nationwide. The kids can create custom minions googles and other crafts while watching the movie. I also like to add to the festivities and let my guests “create” their own cookie sandwich, letting them be as messy as they want to be.

Please take the time to enjoy your loved ones this holiday season. Plan your Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. movie night and use this Minions inspired recipe to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Ipsy August 2014 Glam Bag

ipsy august 2014 bag

The best thing about a month long vacay? Coming home to TWO Ipsy Glam Bags! I got July’s Glam Bag super late thanks  to a billing snafu on my end. In short I liked my July bag, I was not “OMG THIS IS THE BOMB” crazy about it but I found it decent. Since it’s pretty much old news in the world of Ipsy I am going to concentrate on the Ipsy August 2014 Glam Bag which is themed “Beauty Schooled”.  Here’s what I got:

ebblog ipsy august 2014

Ipsy August 2014 Beauty Schooled Contents

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara – I think I am just about over Urban Decay, which might be why I’m a little indifferent about this sample of their new Perversion mascara. Maybe it’s the fleecing of their Naked line. Maybe it’s the lackluster releases. I don’t think I’ve read a single review of Urban Decay’s Perversion where I actually wanted to try it based on the results no matter WHAT the blogger/reviewer claimed.

Coastal Scents Forever Blush Mini Duo – Seriously? The size of this product is SO small I would have to use my fingers to apply this blush. I could understand if this were a NARS sample but it’s Coastal Scents?!?! C’mon Coastal Scents quit being so cheap and drop a full sized item in the bag. The peach is very pretty and the pink shade is just a tad too glittery for my taste (as a blush).  I could probably use this duo as an eyeshadow.

You’re the Balm Green Apple Lip Balm – Love a good lip balm. I dislike that this is in a tin and requires me to use my fingers. It also does not smell/look like green apple but the packaging is really cute and it does keep my lips kissably soft.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More – I’ve repeatedly asked for “no more Dr. Brandt” stuff in my bag and yet this found its way into my cheaply made Ipsy August 2014 Glam Bag. I’m a little “meh” about it.

Lord & Berry Mini Kajal Kohl-Liner – Is this a joke? This is such a SMALL sample size that I could barely line my eyes with it. Add to the very poor performance (this needs to be set with shadow) and this item was a HUGE dud for me.

I have to say that I am a little underwhelmed by the Ipsy August 2014 Glam Bag. Ipsy has spoiled me over the past few months! I’m not excited about the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara as I have been disappointed in most of their recent releases, the Lord & Berry eyeliner is so small I thought it was a joke.  The same with the Coastal Scents offering. Even the bag itself is rather cheap looking this month. The only item I am remotely “excited” about is the and that’s because I’m a lip balm whore. So beyond NOT impressed with my Ipsy August 2014 Glam Bag. Was your bag better? Let me know in the comments section below!

May 2014 Favorites

It’s time for my May 2014 Favorites! I cannot believe it’s June already and that I did not get this up sooner. I’ve been in a bit of a rut as of late and not “inspired”. Whatevs, so over it already. We have had a preview of Summer recently and I am happy to report I have FINALLY dropped my winter weight and ALL of my shorts fit! The best part is, I actually like all of them and I have adverted a shorts shopping trip. SO beyond proud of myself! That means I had more money to spend at The Makeup Show Chicago this past weekend! Woot woot! Anywho, on to my faves!

Back Row: Healthy Sexy Hair Color Safe Soy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner Front Row L to R: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick, Too Faced Melted in Melted Peony and L'Oreal's Miss Manga Mascara

Back Row: Healthy Sexy Hair Color Safe Soy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner
Front Row L to R: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick, Too Faced Melted in Melted Peony and L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Mascara

L’Oreal Miss Manga Mascara – I reviewed this here. I have been LOVING this mascara SO much that I have pretty much forsaken ALL of my other mascaras. I have to say that I thought after a few weeks I might hate the formula but I have fallen even MORE in love with Miss Manga!

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick – This was reviewed here and a fav last month as well. The love continues to flow from me for this product! Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick is the bees knees and now that I have tested this in hot summer like conditions, I love this foundation even more! The Skin Foundation Stick stands up to the heat like a champ, especially when paired with a great primer.

Too Faced Melted Peony – I reviewed this here. I love the formula SO much that I recently ordered two more of their newest shades. Melted Peony has been my go to lip shade once again. I wear it all the time because it is simple to apply and it doesn’t go everywhere. Melted Peony lasts for a while sticking around through drinking and eating.

Healthy Sexy Hair Color Safe Soy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner – I was at the end of my rope with my hair. It’s very fine but I have a lot of it, can be greasy, yet dry and frizzy at the same time. I saw a review of these products online and Ulta had their infamous liter sale going on so I bought them both and I have been in live ever since. I only wash my hair 2 maybe 3 times a week (I shower daily!) if that so this duo has really been getting my hair clean, not making me super oily AND taming my frizzies.

ebblog may 2014 faves ashley pena

Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Saddle – Ok, so I forgot this last month and it should have been included. But this shadow is my MUST have product that I can use to fill my brows, define my crease and line my eyes with. I have yet to find a shade of brown that is remotely similar to this in terms of soft color payoff, longevity and tone. It is my perfect shade of brown.

Purples – My go to color for making my eyes pop is purple. I cannot narrow it down to just one purple color cosmetic that I love but some of my faves are NARS Eyeshadow in Daphne, Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Liner in Ultraviolet, Ether and Psychedelic Sister. I have way to many purple faves to really mention.

Non Beauty Related Faves

KPop – More specifically Girls Generation, f(x), 2NE1 and After School. I think it’s the lack of female pop groups in the US that I actually enjoy. Even with the current Danity Kane reunion, I find myself wanting more girl group goodness. I’ve always loved pop girl groups and I secretly wanted to be a member of a girl group when I was a little girl and well into my teens. I may not know WHAT my fave KPop Girl Groups are singing about, but who cares! I enjoy it and that is all that matters.

Bad Girls Club Chicago – Yes, I admit it. BGC is MY guilty pleasure. I can identify with these young women because I am quite hellraiser in my own right. It’s entertaining, it’s sad and sometimes for me,  it’s like looking in the mirror. There is so much more to this show than the fighting, twerking, etc. And what’s even better for me is this season was shot in my city. Loving it!

Spanish Olives – Yummy, salty little bundles of goodness! I L-O-V-E Spanish Olives. And I have ZERO self control when it comes to them. I can literally eat an entire jar. Which is very dangerous because it leads to swollen sodium bloat! And I am trying to avoid bloating/swelling at ALL costs this summer.
