The holidays are upon us! It is that time of year when the holiday hostess in most of us comes out. We start to planning our “perfect” winter holiday get togethers. There is so much that goes into hosting your own holiday get together. Cooking, gifts, decorating, creating an inviting atmosphere and most importantly cooking. Do you know what type recipes I look for when planning my winter holiday fiestas? Recipes that will impress for less and not take weeks to prepare!

My Semi-Homemade Empanadas Tinga de Pollo (Chicken Tinga Empanadas) are a holiday hit! Featuring the deliciously smoky and spicy Chipotle Peppers from La Morena. It makes me feel better to know that I can run out to my local Tony’s Finer Foods and grab a can from their Hispanic Food Aisle. If you’re lucky like I was you can even snag a deal on La Morena’s Chipotle Peppers.

Semi-Homemade Empanadas Tinga de Pollo (Chicken Tinga Empanadas)

1 oz can of La Morena Chipotle Peppers in Adobo sauce

3 Boneless, skinless chicken breast boiled then shredded

1 15 oz can of Stewed Tomatoes

1 cup of low sodium chicken broth (use the broth from the chicken breast you boiled)

1 small onion sliced very thin

3 Packages of thawed small store-bought Empanada Shells

1 TBSP of your preferred cooking oil

4 TBSP of Melted Butter

Salt to Taste

*Note* You can use whatever parts of the chicken you like. I choose boneless, skinless chicken breast because they are a healthier option and tend to absorb the smoky flavor form the chipotles better.

Combine an entire can of La Morena Chipotle Chiles, stewed tomatoes and the chicken broth in a blender. You want the sauce to have a slightly smooth consistency. If there are small pieces of the pepper in the sauce that is fine. Set aside your chipotle sauce mixture.

In a 3 quart sauce pan add your cooking oil and thinly sliced onions. Cook until slightly translucent. Add in your shredded chicken breast and fry for a minute.

Add in your chipotle sauce mixture, stirring it into the chicken and onions. You are going to want to let the Tinga simmer for at least five minutes or until most of the sauce has been absorbed into the chicken. Set your mixture aside and let it chill to room temperature before going on to the next step.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

Place your empanada shells on a cutting board that is lightly dusted with flour. Place a tablespoon of your Tinga in the middle of the shell and fold the shell up like a taco (or half moon). Do not be tempted to over fill your empanadas! Pinch the edges of the shell shut and then run a fork along the edges to seal your empanada. Place on an un-greased baking, brushing butter on the top of your empanadas.

Place in the oven. Check on them at 6-8 minutes. You will need to flip them so the top of your empanadas brown. When the bottoms start to brown slightly that is when you will want to flip them. Brush your empanadas with more butter and let them finish cooking for another 6-8 minutes.

lamorena empanadas tinga de pollo

This recipe makes roughly 36 appetizer sized empanadas. I serve them warm with crema (Mexican “sour cream”) and guacamole to cut down the heat some. You do not have to use the entire can of La Morena Chipotle Peppers. You can adjust the heat to your preference. If you have left over Tinga de Pollo you can save it for lunch as it’s delicious on a tostada topped with crema!

Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe

sephora favorites brow raising set everyday beauty blog

Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe is a recent limited edition release to their Sephora Favorites. This boxed set is available in two shades: Light/Medium and Medium/Dark. The Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe is available at all Sephora locations (even those inside JCPenney) and retails for $40.00.

I have purchased many a Sephora Favorites set but none have come close to the value of the Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe. Five of the items included in this set are full sized. That’s right! Five full sized brow products! This kit contains everything you’ll need to get your perfect brow for $40.

There are some items in this set that I’ve used before. I’ve raved about Anastasia’s Brow Wiz for what seems like forever. I have not found any brow pencil that comes close to this one. It’s pigmented and creamy (always store the pencil upright with the product facing down). Anastasia’s Brow Gel is equally as fabulous and a long time fave of mine too. These two products alone are what drove me to buy the set.

I’ve used Benefit’s High Brow before and even though I no longer support the company thanks to their ridiculous Bon Qui Qui campaign. I will say that High Brow is a really good pencil highlighter. It’s natural looking, creamy and easy to apply. You can use it under your brow or anywhere else you want a natural highlight. It might come off as ashy on those of us with darker skin tones.

Top to Bottom: Kat Von D Tattoo Brow in Medium Brown, Smashbox Brow Tech Glossy Stick in Brunette, Anastasia Brow Wiz in Dark Brown and Benefit High Brow.

Top to Bottom: Anastasia Brow Wiz in Dark Brown, Smashbox Brow Tech Glossy Stick in Brunette, Kat Von D Tattoo Brow in Medium Brown and Benefit High Brow.

There are two items that are new to me in the Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe: Kat Von D Tattoo Brow and the Smashbox Brow Tech Gloss Stick. A gloss stick for your brows?!?! I know! I had the same reaction. The truth is that there are those of us who have a natural sheen to their brows and using Smashbox Brow Tech Gloss Stick in conjunction with your normal routine adds a “natural” look to your penciled in brow. This product is very easy to use and can be used in place of a brow wax to keep your brows in place. Smashbox Brow Tech Gloss Stick dries down and stays put. It is not necessarily water proof and will stay put as long as you don’t fiddle with your brows much.

The other new item for me in this set is the Kat Von D Tattoo Brow. I like to use this brow pen to create individual brow hairs. Especially where my brows begin. Kat Von D Tattoo Brow is very long wearing and water proof. Medium Brown can be used to lighten up the darker tone of the Brow Wiz in Dark Brown. This is the item I use the least in the kit. That doesn’t mean it’s not good, it’s just not an item I reach for often

Tweezers and a small mirror round out the Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe. While the kits only come in two shade selections I found the Medium/Dark set transitioned well from my lighter auburn summer shade to my nearly black tresses I have now. You can customize the set a bit more by using a brow powder that better compliments your current hair color.

If you’re a brow fanatic like I am, this is the Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe for you. At $40 you’re getting $100 worth of products. This is a beauty bargain from a store that rarely has them. I suggest grabbing Sephora Favorites Brow Raising Brow Wardrobe now before their VIB sale begins this month.

Holiday 2015 Wish List

ebblog holiday wish list 2015 main

In a perfect world I would have access to all of the makeup and beauty products ever produced! Unfortunately, monetary restrictions and release dates prevent my hoarding of all things makeup and beauty. The boyfriend asked me the other day what I wanted for Christmas. Now, I might despise decorating for Christmas BEFORE Thanksgiving but I do start my Christmas shopping early just to avoid the crowds. Color me impressed that he asked me what I wanted so early. Naturally a ton of beauty related items popped in my head. He told me to narrow it down to five (boo!) and here they are: My Holiday 2015 Wish List!

UDXGWEN Ebblog Holiday 2015 Wish List

Urban Decay UDXGwen Palette – Ok and Urban Decay palette that I own zero of the actual colors in it? I’m in! And the packaging is just so pretty! We don’t know much about this palette other than it will be released on November 22, 2015. Stay tuned to all of Urban Decay’s social media accounts for more details about this palette. In all fairness I’ll probably buy this myself but it still earned the top spot on my Holiday 2015 Wish List.

marc jacobs beauty ebblog holiday 2015 wish list

Marc Jacobs Beauty Style Eye-Con 20 Plush Eyeshadow – I was playing with this palette in Sephora the other day. The shadows are remarkable! At $99 it is quite expensive however I own zero Marc Jacobs Beauty eyeshadow palettes and this is a “steal” considering that just one palette retails for $59 for 7 shadows. In this limited edition palette you’re getting 20 shades which is almost 3 palettes for under $100. My Sephora only had one left so the closer we get to the holidays my prediction is that this palette will sell out. I’m not one to buy the uber luxury brands for myself but I have zero issues adding them to my Holiday 2015 Wish List for others to buy moi!

coco mademoiselle ebblog holiday 2015 wish list

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle – This is my signature fragrance that I have been without for over a year so naturally it lands on my Holiday 2015 Wish List. There are three fragrances that my body doesn’t instantly consume: Coco Mademoiselle, Chanel No. 5 and Pink Sugar. Coco Mademoiselle has everything going for it: beautifully rich scent and the bottle is just stunning! I so want this fragrance again I have to really drill this one into his head.

bobbi brown lip university ebblog holiday 2015 wish list

Bobbi Brown University Lip Palette – This palette of 12 lip colors is so pretty and perfect for me because I like having all of my choices in one spot. Bobbi Brown is a head of the holiday palette game by releasing a palette of just lip colors. You can also use some of the shades as blushes too. I very rarely lust after lip products so you know it’s special if it ends up on my Holiday 2015 Wish List.

Make Up For Ever Cult Brush Set – I am dying for this set but at $89 this is most definitely not something I would purchase for myself. I really need to replace some of my cheaper brushes and I have been eyeing this since MUFE announced it. I have a few of their Artisan Brushes and I like them. Their sturdy, well built and have a good weight to them.

I have one non beauty related item on my Holiday 2015 Wish List: the Amazon Echo! I think I need the Amazon Echo (is it not fabulous!) in my life. I’m a sucker for new techie gadgets almost as much as I am for new beauty products. If you celebrate any of the Winter gift giving holidays. What is on your wish list? Are you as excited as I am for the UDXGWEN palette? Let me know in the comments below.

Fall 2015 Trends With Ulta Beauty

Calling all Chicagoans! Calling all Chicagoans! Did you know that we have a brand new Ulta on the Northside in Wicker Park? It’s nestled in a shopping plaza right off of Ashland. There’s a Dunkin Donuts in the same plaza. You can grab your pumpkin spiced whatever and stop in to check out what’s new and the hottest trends for Fall 2015.  The Wicker Park Ulta is located at 1300 N. Ashland Frnt J.

I was treated to a demonstration of some of Ulta’s Hottest Fall 2015 trends by the Wicker Park Ulta Prestige Manager Marshal Click.  On his model he demonstrated the Suede Eye, Cashmere Skin and Velvet lips using some of his favorite items from Smashbox, Too Faced, Lipstick Queen, Urban Decay and Stila.

Ulta Fall 2015 Makeup Wicker Park

Products used to recreate Ulta’s Fall 2015 Makeup Trends Upper Row L to R: Stila Convertible Color Cheek +LIp in Lillium, Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water, Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water, Stila Palette in Spirit and Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara. Bottom Ro L to R: Lipstick Queen Cupid’s Bow in Apollo, Urban Decay 24/7 Lipliner in Blackmail and Urban Decay Primer Potion.

To create the Suede Eye Marshal started by prepping the eye with Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. The Suede Eye look was created using the Stila’s Eyes Are the Windows Palette – Spirit. He started of by Using the shade Puppy all over the lid. To create the sueding effect on the lid he used Go Lightly. For the brow highlight he used Wheat (a FAVE of mine from Stila). To spice up the look he went in with Pigalle (a burgundy shade) on the lid and crease to create what I like to call a spicy smoky.

The recreate the Cashmere Skin look he used Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water to even out his model’s complexion. To add some dimension he lightly contoured her face using Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer. The blush he used was Stila’s Convertible Color Cheek + Lip in Lillium, a pretty shade of nude pink that also can double as your lip color.

The dark wine Vekvet Lip look is hands down my favorite of the season. Marshal created this look using the Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Liner in Blackmail to line her lips and to slightly fill them in. He then placed Lipstick Queen Cupid’s Bow in Apollo on the center of her lip and blending the colors together creating a beautiful multidimensional velvet lip.

It always makes me happy to meet others who are as passionate about makeup as I am. Marshal and his staff are all very knowledgable and eager to assist their customers with all their beauty needs. They have converted this longtime South Side gal to make the quick trek up north for all her Ulta Beauty needs!

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water Review

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is a new release to their permanent line of products. There are a total of eight shades currently available.  Each jar contains 1 fl. oz  and retails for $42.00. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water can be found at Smashbox retailers nationwide.

What the brand says:

“What it is:
A sheer-to-medium BB water with a liquid-silk texture that delivers multiple benefits in just one drop.

What it is formulated to do:
– Oil-free formulation with built-in primer water technology that creates a liquid silk-consistency to glide easily onto your face and moves with the skin
– Features SPF 30 sun protection
– Comes in eight shades

This multitasking BB water with SPF 30 is an ultra-hydrating and oil-free formula that creates a sheer, radiant finish that lasts all day. It delivers a demi-matte complexion that’s never flat, creating a natural-looking canvas, and it minimizes the look of fine lines, pores, and blemishes. This unique BB water allows you to build coverage and does not cause any drying, cracking, or caking during wear.”

My take on Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is this: it’s pretty damn good! Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is one of the new “serum type” foundations. The formula is very thin and has a slightly water-like feel to it. You absolutely have to apply this product with your fingers. Initial application yields a beautiful, natural sheer to light coverage finish that catches the light in all the right places. You can build coverage and cover minor imperfections by layering the product.

smashbox camera ready bb water swatch

The formula of Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is fabulous! It didn’t dry my skin out and actually wore very well even on the drier patches of my skin. My skin felt hydrated through out the day. On its own Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water wears for about 6-8 hours before you’ll notice some slight wear. You can extend wear time buy using this product with a primer and setting with a powder. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water works very well with their Photo Filter Powder Foundation.

While I find the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water fabulous, there are some downsides to it. At $42 for 1 fl. oz it is quite expensive. I also don’t like that the formula does not play well with brushes and sponges. I tried a few application options (other than fingers) and the results all pretty much stunk. If you’re not a fan of using your fingers to apply your base, Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is not for you.

If you’re in the market for a product that will enhance your own skin, yielding a beautiful, natural finish that looks like your skin? Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is for you! Have you tried this product yet? Are you a fan of serum foundations? Let me know in the comments below.
